The chn studied the work of British artist Frank Bowling. Born in British Guiana in 1934, he moved to London in 1953. He still has a working studio not far from The Grove. The chn watched a video by the Tate on his different techniques and worked together for a week to produce a large-scale artwork.
The children used Frank Bowling’s techniques, including spreading paint with spatulas, pouring paint onto the canvas, and spraying water onto it, then tilting the canvas so the paint ran down. They also worked on it from a vertical perspective outside, flicking paint onto the canvas.
They continued their work all week, adding layers to the canvas. Paint was splattered from up high. They glued different objects from around the nursery to the canvas. They wore safety goggles and smashed seashells with a hammer to glue to the canvas, and lastly, printed shapes using dough cutters.
