We were excited to read the new book in the Maya & Marley series, ‘Maya & Marley and the New Friend’, written by @laurahallain.bsky.social and illustrated by Yabaewah Scott. The children enjoyed listening to the story, talking about the themes of book and what they could see in the pictures.
One child showed his friends a cotton bracelet made for him by his mummy in case he misses her when he’s at nursery. The children then made friendship bands for each other.
“I like patties” “I want to eat the chicken” “Cucumbers are my favourite. I like them pickled” “I feel sad when I miss my mum” “He looks sad” “I got friends” “Kazuki is sad” “Sometimes I feel shy. Like when I go somewhere and see people. I stay by my dad” “When I bump I feel sad. I bump my leg”
“He don’t have any friends” “I feel sad when I’m not being nice and no-one wants to play with me” “I don’t get shy” “I have my friends” “It makes me angry when my friends don’t share” “When my friends don’t let me play I go angry” “What makes you sad, Claire?” “I was 3 when I started nursery”
“I feel sad when my brother doesn’t want to play with me” “My mummy makes chicken” “I like spaghetti. I eat it all up” “He looks like my daddy and she looks like my mummy” “She got hair like me” “All the people have skin like me. Brown” “Nanna has dark skin like dad but mummy has got white skin”
