Some of the children visited the rescue hens at Glengall Wharf Garden. They took gifts of watermelon, shredded paper (to lay eggs on) and a tub of cooked rice.
They fed the hens, learned to hold them gently & collected freshly laid eggs to bring back to nursery. Such a rich learning experience.”I see a chicken” “The chicken flied on the house” “He pecked my toes” “She’s eating dirt” “The chicken likes watermelon” “Can you eat the chicken?” “Mummy cook eggs” “I like eggs” “The egg is warm” “Is she laying an egg?” “His feathers are so soft” “The chicken jumped” “I can hear the chicken”
The children washed their hands thoroughly after handling the hens. They also saw bee hives, a huge compost bin, beautiful flowers and even picked some tomatoes.
